Profile
53805 (known as "No. 5" to the engines of the S&D), was one of the 11 7F locomotives built especially for the Somerset and Dorset Railway.
Unlike many of the 7Fs which worked on the S&D, No. 5 has not had a very large history. He spent a lot of time with his brothers learning about how to be a wise engine (as it was ordered that all 7Fs had to be wise), but he wasn't as good as certain other 7Fs.
However, No. 5 did have his uses. He was one of the only engines on the whole line who could control the 4Fs' arguments before they got out of hand, and a lot of people said that that was a great thing.
Sadly, No. 5 was withdrawn in 1963. It was the main factor that led to the 4Fs' escape. Shortly after his withdrawal, he was able to persuade Felix to do what he wanted to do, which led to Felix leaving with his brothers.
The 4Fs met No. 5 one final time during his final journey to Coopers Scrapyard at Bristol Barrow Road. There, he told them what they needed to do to survive, before saying his final goodbyes, and being taken away. He was cut up a few weeks later, in December 1963, after almost 50 years of loyal service to Britain's railways.
